First Set of Public Meetings Held!

The North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Division hosted the first public meetings for the Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 3 pm at the City of Goldsboro City Hall Addition located at 200 North Center Street, Goldsboro, NC; Tuesday, November 11, 2015 at 3 pm at the Washington Civic Center located at 110 Gladden Street, Washington, NC; and Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 3 pm at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Interpretive Center located at 205 S. Ludington Drive, Columbia, NC.

During these meetings the project team was introduced; an overview of the JLUS planning process and 25 compatibility factors were provided; opportunities for public involvement discussed; and an overview of the Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare Count Range given. The public participated in a survey with results presented to the audience in real-time to gauge the understanding of Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range and provide insight into potential compatibility issues. Each presentation was tailored to the region where the meeting was conducted. These meetings begin an essential dialog with the community on the JLUS and compatibility issues that will carry through the project into 2016.

Public Workshop #2 held for the Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study

The North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development Division hosted the second public workshop for the Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) on May 17, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Goldsboro City Hall Annex, 200 North Center Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530; May 18, 2016 at 5:00 pm at the Washington Civic Center located at 110 Gladden Street, Washington, NC 27889; and May 19, 2016 at 5:00 pm at the Dare County Administration Building located at 954 Marshall C Collins Drive, Manteo, NC 27954.

During this workshop the JLUS development team presented on overview of the JLUS and military footprints for the Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range. Meeting attendees participated in a group exercise to provide input on the issues identified to date by placing drafting dots on large issue sheets, as well as identifying additional issues on blank issue sheets. Participants has an opportunity to ask questions with answers provided by the JLUS team. Links are provided below to the presentations and results of the public input exercise.

Public Workshop #3 Held – March 13-16, 2017

The North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development Division hosted the third and final Public Workshop for the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (AFB) and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) on March 13-16, 2017. Workshops were conducted on March 13, 2017, in the City of Goldsboro, NC at the Herman Park Center; on March 14, 2017, in the City of Washington at the Washington Civic Center; on March 15, 2017, in the Town of Plymouth at the Vernon James Research Station; and on March 16, 2017, in the Town of Columbia at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

At this Public Workshop, participants were provided a status update on the JLUS project, key recommendations were reviewed, and the public had an opportunity to provide comment and feedback on the Public Draft JLUS documents and compatibility maps in an Open House format. Opportunities for continued public input through the remainder of the Public Review period were also explained. Because of the expansive geography of the JLUS Study Area, each workshop focused on the issues and recommendations unique to each region. The Public Draft JLUS documents were available for public review and comment from February 28, 2017 through March 24, 2017.

Public Workshop #3 Scheduled for the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study

SAVE THE DATES: March 13-16, 2017

The North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development Division is hosting the third Public Workshop for the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (AFB) and Dare County Range Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) on March 13-16, 2017.

Please join the JLUS development Team at this workshop to review, discuss, and comment on the Public Draft of the JLUS. Documentation includes the project background, compilation of the compatibility issues, and recommended strategies to address compatibility.

The goal of the JLUS is to protect the viability of current and future missions at Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Range, while accommodating community growth, sustaining the economic health of the northeast North Carolina region and protecting public health, welfare and safety.

In order to develop a plan that is responsive to local needs, input from the community is essential! The public is encouraged to join us at this workshop to learn more and participate in this planning study.

The Public Workshop will be provided in four locations focused on each area for your convenience…
